Our first full day in Montreal was a bit of a marathon. We started off with a short journey on the Metro to a slightly more populated area and then thought it would be a good idea to go on a four mile hike in the direction of a large shopping center. We went into a Wall-Mart first to see what to expect when the Asda’s finally get a make-over (not much will change). Bought a cool Megatron T-Shirt that I’ve not seen before and a casual white shirt with embroidered flowers on it (in white so quite subtle). Then a quick stop at Wendy’s for a Baconator Triple Burger (had to try it with a name like that) before going to the shopping centre. Nothing really spectacular in there, not as big as Merry Hill or the like, so not too impressed really. On the way out of the shopping mall Mike spotted a BestBuy and some place called “Future Store” and took some pics for work research After leaving the retail park we headed in the direct of the Olympic stadium, but after about two miles decided that getting a bus would be a better idea and hopped on one to take us straight there. Once we got there it reminded me of Coventry a little as it was just masses of grey concrete. Not much going on there so didn’t bother going inside. I called a picture stop and thought it would be a good idea to climb up a wall for a better background view of the tower. It was only once I got to the top that I realised there was a thirty foot drop the other side, so stood very very still while Mike to the photo.

Fortunately on the other side of the road from the Olympic stadium was the Botanical Gardens & Insectarium so not far to walk this time. About twenty quid (no pound sign on this keyboard) got us access to all parts of the site and wandered around there with the SLR camera out for about three hours checking out the MASSIVE bugs and beautiful Chinese & Japanese gardens. If you were prepared to walk quite slowly and check out absolutly everything you could easily spend to whole day there, but as we had already walked a fair distance at this point we decided to call it a day and head for the bus.

On the way out of the ‘garden center’ we spotted a bike rack where you can hire a bike for about $5 and then drop it off at another bike station in the city when you’re done. “YES!!” we both said, “lets give it a go” For the first couple of miles all was good, we only had to stay on one road which has separate cycle lanes to the cars so is relatively safe. At the end of the road we got the map out and started to plan the rest of the route, this is where it all went ‘Pete Tong’. What should have been about a 30-45 min bike ride turned into a 2hr mountain climb which included stopping off at the main Hospital of all places to pick up some more water. That was prolly the most exercise I’ve had in ages (legs are only just about back to normal after two days) and was absolutely knackered when we go back. At this point the intention was to have a quick nap and then go out for some dinner. But as everyone knows what my naps are like, this became a nine hour sleep and next thing I knew it was 05:30 Tuesday morning.
